Strange place...

I think it's time I got a place of my own.

Nothing against the hotel that I'm staying in. It's a bit dark, of course, and odd smells persist in getting attached to my clothes... The mattress is hard, but I'm used to sleeping on the ground. I wish my neighbours didn't make so much noise though - they're always growling or howling or stuff. Makes life out in the open seem awfully peaceful.

The people are friendly. Well, the porter is. When I said I wanted to move out, he insisted on taking me to the local pub for a drink.

The local pub is actually the hotel bar, and I'm not sure if anyone has been in it since it was a dungeon (hasn't changed much but I suppose it must be the style in the city). Anyway, the porter insisted on plying me with inferior brandy (doesn't normally taste like dirty dishwater, does it?) - which was very kind of him.

Unfortunately I woke with a thumping headache this morning, and I've no memory of how I got home (up the 15 flights of stairs from the basement bar). Feel a bit embarrased really - never been drunk before.

I'm really getting into the city life, aren't I?

THE CITY

It's not quite as I expected...

In the country, the air is fresh and clean; the smells are varied but all organic; and the scenery is verdant and bursting with life.

In the city, the streets and alleys are narrow, and because the buildings are all so tall, they remain dark by day and by night. The pavements are filthy; piles of uncollected refuse line the roadways, disturbed only by the movement of small dark furry creatures. In the major streets, a galaxy of neon signs flash continually as the crowds hurry by, brushing against your shoulder but never greeting you.

I imagined a clean modern and orderly collection of buildings, built to add beauty to the cityscape, with sleek silver travelling tubes (modern trains) silently traversing the streets.

At least, that's what people told me before.

I guess the city has changed greatly in the last few years.

Hello

Hi!

Er - Hi There!

Hello everybody!

Is anybody there??????

My name is Tobe. I've just moved to the city looking for a life of adventure and excitment. I'm a bear. Em - I have no family. I guess I've left all my friends behind in the country, but I'm hoping to making loads of new ones. There's so many animals here in the city - all friends I haven't made yet!

Well, surely some of them are!

I know it's all the rage to keep a web diary instead of a paper one, so I'm going to give it a try!

I'm staying in a hotel for a few days (I think they call it a hovel or hostel or something) but I'm sure I'll get a lovely apartment soon!

This afternoon I'm going to explore the city - I'll let you know what it is like tomorrow!

I'm REALLY looking forward to my new life in the city!
